April 2012: Solar Millennium files for bankruptcy. June 2012: Oakland-based Brightsource Energy acquires the Palen development rights and announces it will use its solar "power tower" technology instead of curved mirrors. September 2014: The California Energy Commission, endorses a smaller version of the project with one tower. The large-scale solar development boom in Southern California's deserts is slowing down. Since late 2013, four large-scale solar operations have begun operating in the deserts of Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
