An entrepreneur is planning a $30 million, science fiction-themed UFO Hotel in Baker, California, about 50 miles northeast of Barstow, according to a news release . Luis Ramallo, best-known for Alien Fresh Jerky store in Baker, plans to build the two-story, 31-room hotel shaped like a spaceship. Although Baker isn't on Route 66, it's a common stop for gas and grub for Mother Road travelers on their side trips to Las Vegas. Baker is virtually the only town with facilities in the Mojave Desert between Barstow and the Nevada border.
